Curriculum

When it's one to a part, we just can't afford to ignore out of tune playing. Or unstable rhythm. Or careless phrasing. Then there's stage presence. Every student is noticed, because there's nowhere to hide.

How Music Students Develop through YAF

A musician is not only the player, but the listener. Through Chamber Music, every player applies their abilities to their individual parts by continually listening and responding to the other musicians around them. At YAF, that often includes faculty as ensemble members.

While rehearsals are a space for discussion, interpretation, and refinement, Performance Seminar prepares students for the stage where practice gives way to presentation. The stage imposes conditions that the practice room does not. Students practice performing under these conditions, receiving individual feedback on how to carry themselves, handle nervousness, and address audiences.

Each Season, students present their work before distinguished guest artists in public Masterclasses, gaining external perspectives while sharing the learning process with audiences.
