How YAF Challenges Every Music Student to Step Up
When it's one to a part, we just can't afford to ignore out of tune playing. Or unstable rhythm. Or careless phrasing. And even when those are solved, we just can't let it all come apart on stage when students are nervous and awkward. There are no shortcuts, only patient attention to detail. Every student is noticed, because there's nowhere to hide.
Learning a piece doesn't end with being able to play all the right notes. That's where it begins.
A musician is not only the player, but the listener. Through Chamber Music, every player applies their individual parts by continually listening and responding to the other musicians around them. How do you coordinate with others when one phrase demands taking time into the next one, without saying a word? Or what nuance does the same articulation convey when written by Beethoven versus by Ravel?
While rehearsals are a space for discussion, interpretation, and refinement, the stage imposes conditions that the practice room does not. The same piano keys suddenly feel unusually heavy, or light. No matter how it's adjusted, the cello endpin is just never quite the right height. Notes that were never missed in practice suddenly are nowhere to be found. Nervousness has robbed you. And then there's public speaking: stand before an audience to speak, and no words come out. When practice gives way to presentation, Performance Seminar trains students in these exact conditions with a forgiving audience of peers and families. Concert cellist and YAF faculty Mr. Li draws from nearly two decades of additional corporate experience addressing shareholders to develop students as both musicians and presenters.
The audience gets to learn too. Each Season, students present their work before a distinguished guest artist in a Masterclass, sharing the lesson with the public.
Only then, after all this feedback, is the performance earned.
