Chamber Music at YAF
"The essence of chamber music is intelligent conversation."
- Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847)

The Missing Piece in Music Education – Chamber Music
Chamber music is a small, conductorless ensemble. With one to a part, it commands from each student a high degree of individual accountability, preparation, and agency for team success. Each musician must balance simultaneous roles as a soloist, ensemble player, and conductor, revealing a dimension of music making inaccessible by private lessons or youth orchestras. It is the core of YAF's training.

Continuous Development
All YAF students of all stages of development are here to study chamber music at conservatory standards. Each rehearsal, students are guided by and often play alongside faculty, building musicianship and life-long connections along the way.
During the regular season (August–April), ensembles and faculty coordinate to meet for 20 90-minute rehearsals to study one or more complete chamber works from the standard repertoire. All ensembles are Piano Trios, Piano/String quartets, Piano/String quintets, or larger.
Students participate in multiple performances both as chamber musicians and soloists throughout the year, including recitals, masterclasses, and other community-focused engagements.
