Performance Seminar
Students learn to command a stage through individual presentation, public speaking, and ensemble playing under simulated conditions of live performances.

One Take: The Limitations of the Practice Room
Before the first note is played, the concert begins the moment the performer steps onto the stage. It ends only when the last audience member can no longer see or hear them. What happens in between, when nervousness sets in, cannot be replicated in a practice room. Presenting live in front of an audience reveals hidden gaps in preparation that take the inexperienced by surprise, when results matter the most.
Performance Seminar at YAF addresses each student's stage readiness directly. Classes recreate environments similar to concerts, auditions, or competitions for students to test repertoire under pressure in front of faculty and peers. Each student receives curated feedback and critique to proactively address their individual tendencies long before ever reaching a public audience.
Three Performance Seminars will be held during the season to focus on distinct aspects of stage preparation:
October 2026: Individual Stage Presence in Solo Repertoire
January 2027: Public Speaking: Extemporaneous and Prepared Delivery
March 2027: How to Perform as an Ensemble
All YAF students are expected to participate in each session. Parents and families are encouraged to attend.
