Chamber Music at YAF
"The essence of chamber music is intelligent conversation."
- Felix Mendelssohn

Chamber Music at YAF offers a conservatory-level ensemble training program throughout the academic year to students ages 8–18 studying piano, strings, and woodwinds. Through weekly guidance under accomplished teaching artists, students gain a deep understanding of performance practices, rehearsal techniques, and music making, while building life-long connections.

Chamber Music is a small ensemble of two to eight musicians each playing individual parts. Its collaborative nature emphasizes a delicate simultaneous balance of soloist, ensemble player, and even conductor. Requiring a high degree of individual preparedness and team accountability, students unlock critical aspects of music performance not realized in private studies or orchestral playing.

Chamber Music runs in two semesters from August through May of each academic year. YAF organizes students into groups paired a member of our faculty to prepare a masterwork from the standard repertoire. Groups are formed based on similar age, level, and geographical location, and perform regularly in their local communities to build a strong culture of fine arts.
